Panthers hire Seahawks VP Scott Fitterer as next GM

January 15th, 2021

The Carolina Panthers have hired Scott Fitterer, formerly the Seattle Seahawks’ vice president of football operations, as their next general manager.

The team announced Fitterer had accepted their offer in a tweet Thursday.

Per the Panthers, Fitterer has agreed to a five-year deal. He went through two interviews for the job, first speaking through videoconference on Monday in the team’s final day of interviews, then an in-person interview with head coach Matt Rhule and owner David Tepper. He was one of four finalists, and apparently stuck out.

From the Panthers:

“We went through a thorough process and it was a great final four,” Tepper said. “We thought Scott was the best fit for the organization.”

Fitterer, a Seattle native and former pitcher in the Toronto Blue Jays organization, has reportedly worked for the Seahawks since 2001. His rise to college scouting director followed by other positions coincided with the Seahawks rise to Super Bowl champions.

In Carolina, Fitterer will be tasked with leading a team still navigating through the post-Cam Newton (or post-Luke Kuechly) era. The Panthers finished 5-11 in its first season with Teddy Bridgewater under center, and is set to pick eighth in the 2021 NFL draft.
