Fans react to “cringe” new Simpsons song: “Put it out of its misery”

May 13th, 2024

A new song that appeared in the latest episode of The Simpsons has been criticised online by fans of the show.

The song premiers tonight (May 13) in the latest episode of the show and is called ‘Little E.U’ and features lyrics about tipping waiters and restaurant staff in Europe. The song features several vocoder moments from the main characters and is set to an electronic beat.

The Simpsons, now in its 35th season, was well known for iconic songs in its earliest seasons, such as ‘The Monorail Song’, ‘See My Vest’ and ‘Talkin’ Softball’.

On the show’s official Twitter feed, fans were initially optimistic as programme makers described the show’s new musical endeavour as “song of the summer”, suggesting a return to the show’s most popular songs. However, on listening, fans of the show disagreed and criticised the song heavily.

”My expectations were incredibly low but still it was somehow worse,” one fan wrote on X, formerly Twitter, while another added: “put it out of its misery, Jesus.”

One user wrote: “Simpsons possibly getting even worse? How?” while another added: “I wish they would have ended the show after the movie in 2007 my god.”

Many others pointed out that some of the claims in the song about tipping in Europe are also inaccurate. Check out more of the reactions here:

In other news, The Simpsons producer Tim Long apologised to fans recently after the show killed off an original character.

In recent episode ‘Cremains of the Day’, Larry the Barfly (aka Larry Dalrymple) suddenly dropped dead at Moe’s Tavern.

Larry, who is often seen in the background at the bar, has been a part of the series since the very beginning, but was never given a proper line of dialogue.

Long has since apologised for upsetting fans, but noted how the huge emotional reaction to a background character’s death on the show from fans online highlighted just how beloved the show still is.

Speaking to TMZ, the producer said the creative team intended for Larry’s death to hit viewers hard, even though he never had a big moment on the show.

Long noted that characters don’t often die on The Simpsons, which is perhaps why fans were so caught off guard. In the episode, Homer, Moe, Lenny and Carl all attend Larry’s funeral, but soon realise that they know virtually nothing about their supposed friend.

In other news, The Simpsons star Harry Shearer has suggested that the recasting of Dr Hibbert has “affected” his former character.
