Yankees ace Gerrit Cole ejected after calling out umpire, manager Aaron Boone also tossed

September 24th, 2022

NEW YORK – Upset at Brian Knight’s strike zone, a livid Gerrit Cole was ejected from Friday night’s game at Yankee Stadium.

After the Boston Red Sox had tied the game in the sixth, the steaming mad Yankees starter came off the mound following the third out, pointing and yelling in the direction of Knight, who tossed the right-hander.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone shot out of the Yankees dugout to intervene and was quickly ejected by Knight.

The direct cause of Cole’s anger was a close 98-mph 1-2 fastball to Alex Verdugo, who took it low for a ball.

On the next delivery, Cole came back with the same pitch at 99-mph, only right over the heart of the plate, and Verdugo crushed it to right-center field for a game-tying, three-run homer.

After Cole struck out J.D. Martinez to end the inning, that’s when the fireworks began.

Cole walked two batters Friday night, including Tommy Pham in the pivotal sixth inning. In the first inning, Pham homered to right off Cole, who has now yielded seven home runs in his last three starts – five of them against the last-place Red Sox.

With eight strikeouts, Cole increased his MLB-leading total to 244, putting him four Ks behind Ron Guidry’s single-season franchise record, set in 1978.

The Yankees went on to win, 5-4. Aaron Judge went 1-for-4 and remains at 60 home runs.
