Olaf Scholz accused of being ‘autistic know-it-all’ – by German politician in chancellor’s own coalition

May 29th, 2024

Olaf Scholz is an “autistic know-it-all,” the chairman of the German parliament’s defence committee has said, as tensions rise over Berlin’s refusal to send powerful missiles to Ukraine.

Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, a politician from Mr Scholz’s coalition ally the FDP, made the harsh jibe amid frustration over his decision not to send Taurus missiles to Kyiv, among other alleged failings in office.

She told German newspaper Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung: “After three years, I’ve noticed that he has virtually autistic traits, both in terms of his social contact in politics and his inability to explain to citizens his actions.

“You cannot get through to him because he is a crass know-it-all.”

She went on to claim that Mr Scholz’s own allies felt the same way towards the German chancellor and had complained about it to her as well.

Ms Strack-Zimmermann has previously clashed with Mr Scholz over the Taurus issue and his slow decision-making on other supplies demanded by Kyiv since the outbreak of the war.

In April, she said that time-consuming debates in the German government about which weapons or supplies they could send has proven to be a “catastrophe for Ukraine”.

She also accused Mr Scholz of refusing to provide Taurus missiles for domestic political reasons, not European security, suggesting he fears a backlash from dovish leaders in his centre-left SPD party.

Mr Scholz had not immediately responded to the extraordinarily personal attack as of Wednesday afternoon.

He has previously argued that Taurus missiles are a red line for Germany as they require German boots on the ground to operate, an excuse disputed by security analysts and Western allies.

Ms Strack-Zimmermann’s comments are particularly embarrassing for Mr Scholz as her FDP party is part of his own coalition government.

The lead candidate for the FDP in next month’s European elections, she has been dubbed by party colleagues as their “Eurofighter,” referring to the fighter jet, due to her bellicose style.

It is not the first time Mr Scholz has been accused of being a “know-it-all”, with the German magazine Spiegel putting the jibe on its front page – using a different German idiom, “Besserwisser” – in November 2023.
