October 29th, 2023

Grammy award-winning reggae artiste Kabaka Pyramid encourages those in power in Jamaica to establish designated locations where tourists and locals can do business and mingle. The artiste points to the experience he had on his visit to Sao Paulo, Brazil and how it could be replicated in Jamaica.

The Contraband singer recorded a video from the streets of Sao Paulo to give a clear example of what he was recommending for Jamaica. Kabaka shared the video on his Instagram with the following caption.

“listening??? We need national support for arts and culture. I was also told that this whole area is blocked off every Sunday, no motor vehicles allowed, for the people to fulljoy music and other cultural activites. EVERY SUNDAY. Only during Carnival i see dis gwaan a Jamaica.”

Kabaka Pyramid joins the many voices calling for more support in the field of art and culture from those in authority and corporate. The entertainer also highlights another issue faced by locals in Jamaica, in which they are usually prevented from mixing and mingling with tourists freely.

In the video taken from the streets of Sao Paulo, Kabaka describes the vibe in the area by stating, “Right now we deh pon the main road of Poalista basically like Manhattan weh deh inna Brazil inna Sao Poalo, and you just the people them set up them arts and crafts right pon the street side, see the road deh, everybody benefits from the tourists them you understand, Jamaica we can do them thing yah nuh.”
