    COVID-19 Vaccination in Jamaica Begins Wednesday, March 10th

    Today March 8th, Jamaica collected a total of 50,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines which was a donation from India to help the island fight against the deadly disease.

    Jamaica’s Health Minister, Dr Christopher Tufton stated that getting the vaccines was a major move in the fight against coronavirus on the island.

    This will be the largest logistics operation that will be taken on the island aside from general elections.

    Prime minister Holness took to social media to make the announcement a few hours ago.

    Holness continued, stating “I wish to take the opportunity to express our gratitude to Prime Minister Modi (@narendramodi) and the people of India”. 

    The Covishield vaccine was developed in a collaboration between Oxford University and pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca. It is manufactured by the Pune-based Serum Institute of India.

    Another set of 14k vaccines are expected to arrive on Thursday.

    Dr. Tufton outlines that the vaccines will first go to the priority group which mainly consists of the health care workers and persons over the age of 60.

    65% of Jamaica’s general population will be vaccinated by March 2022.

    March 7th has been recorded as the date with the highest positive results, this continues from a daily record increase over the previous days.

    According to Holness, if the daily case counts don’t improve over the next 3 weeks a lock-down will be on the books.
