May 11th, 2023

A shooting incident in St. Thomas left 36-year-old Kenrick Bloomfield dead when he was shot by Beryllium security guards who mistook a toy gun for an actual weapon.

According to reports, at around 2 PM in the afternoon, Bloomfield, who hails from Johnstown and is said to be of unsound mind, aimed an object at a group of Beryllium security guards who had been in the process of performing maintenance work on an ATM (Automated Teller Machine) in the West Street area in Morant Bay.

As reported by Superintendent Allison Byfield, Head of the St. Thomas Police Division to the Gleaner, as the guards were leaving, the now deceased appeared and approached them. She stated that after not heeding their warnings to step back, Bloomfield raised his hand which held something that seemed to be a gun thus “he was shot and injured and rushed to the hospital.”

Bloomfield was later pronounced dead at the Princess Margaret Hospital.
